GASTOWN

Seeing and hearing the steam clock always brings a huge smile to my face, almost like I’m a kid again. I truly appreciate life’s simple pleasures, and I’m glad that as I’ve grown older, I’ve focused on collecting memories rather than material possessions.

What to Know about the Steam Clock
A little insight about the steam clock: It was crafted by Canadian clockmaker Raymond Saunders, who went on to create a total of 150 unique clocks displayed worldwide as public artworks. Interestingly, the clock’s whistle also played a role in preserving the historic Gastown neighborhood by drawing in tourists. Local merchants realized that attracting tourists was crucial, and the steam clock became instrumental in bringing visitors to the town, sustaining the local businesses. I hope more towns, particularly in developing countries, can come up with innovative ideas to attract tourists and benefit their communities.

What have I learned?
The significance of quality time in relationships is profound. Dr. Waldinger, Director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, mentioned in his widely-shared TED Talk that “good relationships keep us happier and healthier.” While I cherish solo travel for the introspective time it offers, allowing me to discover more about myself, there’s an undeniable joy in sharing beautiful moments and delicious food with someone special. I dearly wish my mother was still here, as I long for the chance to do things together.

My two cents
Here’s my perspective for the hardworking professionals out there: It’s crucial to find happiness in the company you keep at work, considering the substantial time spent there—it’s like a second family. Your contributions should be valued, and everything you do ought to contribute positively, maintaining a balance in the business world.
